German tuition

German lessons online and in-person

Whether your target is a high-scoring Junior Cycle or Leaving Cert result, wishing to brush up on the basics and make headway in a non-exam year, or assistance with college German, all weekly grinds are customised and focus on where you are now in your learning and where you need to be. Weekly sessions are of one hour duration on a one-to-one or small group basis, online via Microsoft Teams or in-person.

The Four Areas Covered

Oral German & exam preparation

The German oral is worth 25% of the Higher Level Leaving Cert exam result. The focus in the weekly grinds is on all 3 sections of the exam: General conversation, Project or Picture stories and Role-Play and bulding confidence in perfecting students' German oral language skills. Having examined mock orals in Dublin schools for ten years, I guide students on grammatical accuracy, pronunciation and excellent content delivery for all 3 sections of the exam. Mock orals are also carried out in the weekly grinds under exam conditions on request.

Reading comprehension

Approach and tips, knowledge of key German question words, tenses and other grammatical items and analysis of stylistic devices and content, are covered in conjunction with regular practice of past reading comprehensions.

Listening comprehension

Basic and higher level vocabulary and grammar that commonly appear in the listening comprehension are revised to enable students to improve in this exam component. Students get to practise past aural comprehensions, view transcripts and are provided with simple tips to boost their grade.

Grammar, vocabulary & written expression

Recognition and application of grammatical structures, for example, gender, case and number, adjective endings and relative pronouns is covered via frequent practice of past Applied Grammar questions using comprehensive Applied Grammar notes and my German book Complete German Grammar. Detailed vocabulary notes are also provided for use in weekly testing. Students are equipped with exam approach, strategies, tips, layout, essential grammar and useful expressions, enabling them to perform at their best in the Written Production section by delivering excellent written pieces, for example, written comments on a theme and letters.
